A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's major government projects.
The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” declared the country's president.
The leader announced that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The leader stated plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the former leader, whose term concluded the year before. This venture was intimately linked to his leadership's strategic goals for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the army, marking a notable increase of its responsibilities in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an fast-tracked pace, defying predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also sparked significant questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an earlier accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a primary political opposition demanded an prompt suspension in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was proposed pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party declared that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."
In reply, the head of state asserted that the train had been running in total compliance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and management of these vital initiatives.
