A uniquely yellow-fronted apartment block visible behind helped us locate the footage.
We are analyzing images and video shared this morning that show the scene of a reported car bomb explosion that Russian officials say fatally injured a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.
Russian authorities stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that exploded and that he later died of his wounds. An investigation is under way.
Our starting point to check the site from which the pictures were from was based on posts saying the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.
Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to corroborate the unique yellow hue of a adjacent apartment building seen in the footage.
Identifying other structures, streetlights and the road configuration verified where the pictures were captured.
We also checked that the videos were new and that the images had not undergone digital alteration.
