Sam Fender received the prestigious award recently in the North East

The artist has handed over the full amount of his twenty-five thousand pound Mercury Prize cash to the Music Venues Trust, which operates to protect the Britain's grassroots music venues.

The star was awarded the cheque on October 16 as his third album his work was named the best record of the previous year.

He has chosen to give the cash to the trust, in acknowledgment of the crucial part small stages had in his beginning days.

"I couldn't be pursuing my current career if it weren't for all the performances I did around the area, and further afield, when I was starting out," stated the artist. "These spaces are legendary, but they are struggling."

Since the start of 2023, over 150 of these spaces have permanently closed – approximately one-sixth of the whole industry in the UK.

Recently, major artists including Pulp, Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all aided the MVT in its attempts to keep the scene afloat, by applying a minor surcharge to their ticket prices, which benefits independent venues.

Fender also took part, generating in excess of £100,000 on his 2024 arena tour to assist 38 local spots across England, Scotland, and Wales.

The money helped spaces that were dealing with possible closure due to challenges caused by floods, blazes and bereavements, as well as permit problems, conflicts and sound issues.

Other venues were granted funding support in modernizing facilities and technical equipment that helped musicians and concertgoers.

"The idea that revenue from shows in major spaces helps the smaller venues, where it kicks off for performers like me, is just logical," the star has commented.

Fender is not the first artist to contribute his award funds to worthy causes.

Back when they won the award in the mid-90s for their album their work, lead singer the singer stated that the act would donate their winnings to the charity War Child.

That year, musician the artist shared her award between multiple good causes, such as the NSPCC and a Sickle Cell organization.

"And I contributed a thousand pounds to Highgate Newtown, to their classes, because I trained in gymnastics when I was younger and they lacked better apparatus," Ms Dynamite explained to the media.

Two years ago, Ezra Collective donated their prize money to the community center that developed their act, alongside other independent music bodies.

Additionally winners that year the group donated their winnings to a charity for MS after a friend was identified with the condition.

"Winning was sufficient," said singer Heather Small. "The prize was the extra but we could do without the extra, because we had the cake. So our winning touched the lives of others."

Last week, the trust shared it had rescued a couple of grassroots venues in that region, by placing them under local control.

One venue in that area and the second in that location were acquired under the public acquisition initiative, which is funded by the arts council and supporters who acquire "stakes" in the buildings.
