The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Chose the Incorrect Critical Role Track
This latest animated series, the newest animated adventure by the beloved role-playing group, revealed a new opening credits. It features the beloved group of outcasts, outcasts, and rogues kicking ass and making their mark, while also hinting at multiple agonizing backstories for key figures such as the voice actor's wizard Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, the character Fjord.
All in all, the opening looks stunning. However, I felt that an element was lost in the music selection.
The intro employs "Welcome to Wildemount", a truly stellar composition composed by producer and singer Colm McGuinness. It's a track from the soundtrack album of that title, the second one released by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division their music brand. It's a wonderful nostalgic choice, and I believe that fans of the second campaign will appreciate its presence.
But for me, The series' intro fails to capture the hype and energy that accompanied the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "It's Your Turn", written by singer-songwriter the artist, was an instant classic in my view when it was initially unveiled in that year, and it only got better when cast member Sam Riegel wrote words to the melody for the animated Campaign 2 opening in the later year.
Featuring vocals from one actress, Laura Bailey, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the song was catchy and enjoyable. At the time, I hadn't even watched the follow-up series yet, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my device. It's a song that excites you before you start an episode of fantasy hijinks.
The show's opening with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the right notes for me. It's a grand piece of music, but from what I know of this party, I feel that its tone is somewhat mismatched.
Of course, Critical Role has already said that the animated show will have a few surprises and variations from the original live sessions. An adjusted mood for its opening seems to be among these.
This animated adventure will be available to watch on Prime Video from Nov. 19. For those eager until then, or want a head start to get to know the characters of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are available on Spotify and the video site.
