The teenager has featured in seven games for the Spanish giants, including five starts.

When an teenage makes Real Madrid a historic moment in a pivotal European match against Manchester City, it naturally attracts acclaim and attention.

During his maiden start in the competition - and fifth game for the club - Thiago Pitarch made a strong impression as the 15-time Champions League winners claimed a 3-0 round of 16 first leg lead at the Bernabeu.

The young player, who also made his club debut in the play-off round a month ago with a substitute appearance at Benfica, then assisted the Madrid side overcome the English champions in Tuesday's second leg to secure a quarter-final berth.

Aged 18 years and 226 days, Pitarch was the club's youngest player to begin two matches in the Champions League's latter rounds, surpassing star Vinicius Jr's previous mark by 10 days.

A Meteoric Rise From The Academy

The midfielder is the latest to emerge from the club's academy and is quickly establishing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most exciting protegees.

He signed for Madrid from CD Leganes in 2023, having previously been with Atletico and Getafe youth teams, and initially featuring for the Juvenil C team, where he rapidly created a positive impact.

He progressed to the B team and it was during a friendly match in which they played against the academy's first team, then coached by the former defender, where the teenager is said to have caught the attention of the present manager, who replaced Xabi Alonso in January.

Spanish media would later label the moment as "love at first sight," noting he excelled not only for his skill on the ball, but for the energy, character and drive he added to the team.

'His Best Attribute Is His Personality'

In the summer of 2025, former boss Xabi Alonso invited Pitarch to train with the first team and awarded him minutes during pre-season.

Yet, it was Arbeloa's appointment that proved the defining moment in his development as he was introduced as a late substitute in each leg against the Portuguese side that led to the meeting with Manchester City.

"I've dreamed of this every night before going to bed, the first day I began playing football, each day you go to train and every day you have a game," said Pitarch following his debut.

"I have just achieved my ambition with the greatest club in the planet and in the top tournament."

Handed a starting debut in the Spanish league against his former club - where he was for four years after moving from Atleti in 2018 - he has kept his spot for the following four as injuries to Jude Bellingham and Ceballos provided an opportunity.

The teenager has taken it with displays that have belied his age and inexperience.

"He's a very quick player, and you can see his capabilities," remarked the coach. "He is extremely energetic, with great endurance, effort and mobility."

The player's mindset has also impressed his manager.

"His standout trait is his personality," continued he. "He constantly demands the possession, and even under pressure, he doesn't feel it.

"I realize fans might be astonished to see him make his debut in a European fixture, but he is selected because I had total confidence in him to do what he usually does.

"He will continue to get chances with the main squad. It's a pleasure to have a talent like him."

A Future International Decision

Pitarch was born in Fuenlabrada, in the Spanish capital's community, and grew up deeply involved in Spanish football, moving through local academies before entering the club's famous youth academy.

He possesses dual Moroccan and Spanish nationality, giving him the option to represent either country at the highest level.

According to Fifa eligibility rules, players may represent multiple nations at junior level without being locked in, with the ultimate choice only final once they appear in a competitive senior international match.

He has featured for Spain at underage levels, turning out for both the U19 and U20 teams, and took part in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where Spain reached the quarter-finals.

Nevertheless, he has yet to commit to any full national side, who are watching his progress with keen attention.

In a recent interview, Pitarch said: "I haven't made my ultimate choice yet. Things are positive with Spain, but I'll make a decision soon."

This scenario mirrors that of other bi-national talents such as Real team-mate Brahim Diaz and Barca star Lamine Yamal. While teenage Yamal chose Spain, Brahim decided to play for the Atlas Lions.

Eyes on the Prize

For now, his attention is on establishing himself in the Real side and repaying his manager's belief.

He played 74 minutes in the 2-1 victory at City, which completed a five-one overall triumph and a quarter-final matchup with Bayern Munich.

His substitution by another academy player in Manuel Angel underscored Arbeloa's trust in the next generation to help the club chase trophies to come.

After his impressive impact so far on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is expected to be a central figure in that.

"The manager handles me the identical way. We deal with it very naturally. I attempt not to overanalyze it too much - I must earn my playing time on the field," he said after the success at Manchester.
